Keir Starmer Refuses to Quit as Labour Faces Major Election Setback Across UK

08 May 2026 Keir Starmer Refuses to Quit as Labour Faces Major Election Setback Across UK

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has confirmed he will continue leading the country despite Labour suffering significant losses in the latest local election results across England. The election outcome has increased pressure on the Labour leader, with critics inside and outside the party questioning his future as Prime Minister.

Labour reportedly lost hundreds of council seats in several key areas, including traditional strongholds in northern and central England. The biggest gains came from Reform UK, led by Nigel Farage, as voters shifted support away from the country’s two major political parties.

Speaking after the results, Starmer admitted the election had been “very tough” for Labour but insisted he would not resign. The Prime Minister said his government still has a strong mandate following Labour’s landslide general election victory in 2024 and promised to continue focusing on economic recovery, public services, and national reform.

Several Labour politicians have openly criticised the party’s recent performance, with some calling for leadership changes following the disappointing results. However, senior cabinet members including David Lammy and John Healey publicly backed Starmer and urged the party to remain united.

Political analysts say the results highlight growing frustration among voters over the cost of living, public services, and government policies. The elections also showed rising support for smaller parties including the Green Party and the Liberal Democrats, suggesting a major shift in the UK’s political landscape ahead of future national elections.

Despite the setback, Starmer has made it clear that he intends to stay in office and push forward with Labour’s long term agenda. The coming months are expected to be critical for the Prime Minister as he attempts to rebuild public confidence and stabilise support within his own party.
