European Leaders Reaffirm Support for Ukraine at London Summit

07 Jun 2026 European Leaders Reaffirm Support for Ukraine at London Summit

European leaders gathered in London on Sunday to demonstrate their continued commitment to Ukraine as the war with Russia enters another critical phase.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer welcomed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, French President Emmanuel Macron, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz for high-level discussions focused on military assistance, security guarantees, and diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the conflict.

The meeting came amid renewed fighting and escalating tensions between Moscow and Kyiv. Recent Ukrainian drone operations targeting locations deep inside Russian territory have highlighted Ukraine’s growing strike capabilities, while Russian attacks on civilian areas in Ukraine continue to cause casualties and destruction.

During the talks, the leaders emphasized the importance of maintaining united European support for Ukraine. They also discussed ways to strengthen Ukraine’s defences and increase economic and political pressure on Russia as efforts to secure a lasting peace remain stalled.

The summit followed Russian President Vladimir Putin’s rejection of a proposed direct meeting with President Zelenskyy, further dimming hopes for near-term negotiations. Ukrainian officials have repeatedly called for meaningful peace talks, while accusing Moscow of prolonging the conflict through continued military operations.

European governments remain engaged in discussions over future security arrangements for Ukraine, including potential guarantees designed to prevent renewed aggression after any eventual peace agreement. The leaders stressed that sustained international cooperation would be essential to achieving a stable and durable resolution to the war.

The London meeting underscored Europe’s determination to remain closely aligned in its support for Ukraine, even as diplomatic efforts to end the conflict face significant challenges.
