Budget Plans for Cumbria Combined Authority to Be Discussed in Carlisle

Budget Plans for Cumbria Combined Authority to Be Discussed in Carlisle

Local leaders are preparing to discuss the budget principles for the newly proposed Cumbria Combined Authority at a meeting in Carlisle next week. The discussion comes as plans for the combined authority, which will cover the whole of Cumbria, move closer to formal establishment early this year.
The authority is part of a major devolution deal agreed between Cumbria’s councils and the UK Government, which will give the region more control over funding and decision-making on key issues such as transport, skills, housing and economic development. Cumbria is expected to receive significant investment over the next 30 years as part of these changes.
The budget principles discussion will focus on how funds should be prioritised and allocated once the combined authority is operational. Setting a clear framework for the budget is seen as a key early step in making sure the new body can deliver on its promised powers and support local services and infrastructure.
Cumbria’s combined authority will be led by representatives from Westmorland and Furness Council and Cumberland Council until a directly elected mayor is chosen in 2027. The meeting next week will include councillors and officials who are working on establishing the authority’s financial and governance arrangements.
Local residents and businesses are expected to watch the debate closely, as the combined authority is intended to bring new investment and influence over spending decisions that affect daily life across the county. Once agreed, the budget principles will help shape future financial decisions and ensure the authority can meet its goals from the start.
