Barrow MP Backs Government Crackdown on Fly-Tipping

13 Apr 2026 Barrow MP Backs Government Crackdown on Fly-Tipping

Barrow and Furness MP Michelle Scrogham has backed new government efforts to strengthen enforcement against fly-tipping, describing it as a serious issue affecting communities and the environment.

The government has recently announced tougher measures to tackle illegal dumping, including stronger enforcement powers for local authorities, increased surveillance, and the possibility of seizing and crushing vehicles used by offenders.

Fly-tipping continues to be a major problem across the UK, with millions of incidents recorded annually, placing a heavy financial and environmental burden on councils responsible for clearing dumped waste.

Scrogham said she supports stronger action to deter offenders and help protect local communities in Barrow and Furness, where incidents of illegal dumping have also been a growing concern.

The MP highlighted the importance of ensuring councils have the tools and resources needed to respond quickly and effectively, while also stressing that repeat offenders should face tougher penalties.

Her comments come as part of wider political backing for a national “zero-tolerance” approach to waste crime, aimed at reducing incidents and restoring pride in public spaces.

Authorities say fly-tipping not only damages the environment but also places unnecessary costs on taxpayers, with enforcement agencies continuing to step up investigations and prosecutions.
