Cumbrian MP Demands Urgent Action Over Ongoing Bus Service Disruptions
Pressure is mounting on transport authorities and bus operators after a Cumbrian MP called for urgent intervention to tackle ongoing disruption to public bus services across the region.
Josh MacAlister, MP for Whitehaven and Workington, has backed formal action taken by Cumberland Council against bus operator Stagecoach, following hundreds of complaints from residents about cancelled services, delays, and poor communication with passengers.
According to MacAlister, his office has received more than 200 complaints in recent months from people affected by unreliable bus services. Many residents reported being left waiting for buses that never arrived or facing sudden cancellations with little warning.
The issue has become particularly serious in rural and coastal communities, where public transport often serves as the only practical means of reaching workplaces, schools, healthcare appointments, and essential services. Local leaders warn that continued disruption risks increasing isolation for vulnerable residents and damaging confidence in public transport.
MacAlister has also written directly to the Traffic Commissioners, arguing that substantial public funding is being invested in local transport improvements and that commercial operators must play their part in ensuring dependable services. He stressed that reliable bus connections are essential for economic activity, education, healthcare access, and community wellbeing.
The dispute comes amid wider concerns about transport infrastructure across Cumbria. Stagecoach has argued that extensive roadworks and traffic congestion have significantly affected its ability to maintain schedules. The company says simultaneous road projects on key routes have created severe delays and operational challenges in recent weeks.
The operator is already under scrutiny after receiving a formal warning in 2024 following an investigation into failures to run certain registered services in Cumbria. Regulators previously concluded that some routes had not been operated as required without sufficient justification.
In response to the latest criticism, Stagecoach acknowledged passenger frustration and said it remains committed to improving reliability and rebuilding public trust. The company stated that it is working with local authorities, regulators, and community representatives to strengthen services and address ongoing challenges.
As investigations continue, residents and local officials are demanding swift improvements, arguing that dependable public transport is essential to maintaining economic and social connections across West Cumbria. Many now hope that increased regulatory scrutiny will lead to lasting changes and a more reliable bus network for communities across the region.
