£16.8 million investment to boost Aspatria dairy production capacity.
A significant £16.8 million investment has been confirmed for the First Milk plant in Aspatria, marking a major upgrade for one of Cumbria’s key dairy production sites.
The project will focus on increasing production capacity at the Lake District Creamery by around 20 percent, following the replacement of existing cheese vats with larger, more efficient equipment. The upgrade is designed to improve operational performance and support growing demand for high-quality cheddar and dairy ingredients.
According to First Milk, the investment represents its largest single capital project at the site to date and reinforces its long-term commitment to British cheese production, farmer members, and the wider regional economy.
The scheme builds on previous investments of around £30 million at the Aspatria facility in recent years, further strengthening its production capabilities and resilience. The project is expected to run across two financial years.
Company representatives said the development will enhance efficiency and support future growth, ensuring the creamery remains competitive in both domestic and international markets.
The announcement forms part of a wider strategy by First Milk to modernise its operations, improve sustainability, and invest in low-carbon logistics and energy solutions across its supply chain.
