Concerns Over Community Transport Provider Lead To Council Suspension

16 May 2026 Concerns Over Community Transport Provider Lead To Council Suspension

A community transport organisation in Cumbria has been temporarily suspended from using Cumberland Council-owned minibuses following the identification of serious compliance concerns.

The decision affects Cumbria Community Transport, a registered charity that has provided accessible and affordable transport services across the county since 1999, operating a fleet of 16-seat vehicles.

According to the council, the suspension followed an internal review and meetings in which officers identified issues linked to driver safety checks, permit use, and adherence to national regulatory standards set by bodies such as the DVSA and the Department for Transport.

Cumberland Council’s portfolio holder for sustainable, resilient and connected places, Councillor Denise Rollo, said the action was taken after significant concerns were raised about the operation and management of council-owned vehicles. She stressed that the decision was made in line with the council’s duty as a public authority responsible for vehicle safety and compliance.

The council confirmed that the suspension will remain in place until the issues are fully addressed and satisfactory evidence is provided to demonstrate that required standards are being met consistently.

Officials added that they are working to put temporary arrangements in place to ensure continuity of essential transport services, particularly for vulnerable users and key journeys, during the suspension period.

While emphasising that the move was not intended to undermine the wider value of community transport services, the council said public safety and legal compliance must remain the top priority.
