Work to Begin on Repairing Landslip-Damaged Lake District Road

18 Apr 2026 Work to Begin on Repairing Landslip-Damaged Lake District Road

Work is scheduled to begin next week to repair a section of road in the Lake District that has been closed since a landslip caused significant damage. Local authorities confirmed that final preparations are now underway, with specialist contractors expected to start work on April 22.

The affected stretch of the A592, located between Troutbeck and the Kirkstone Pass, has remained shut since November after part of the road was undermined by the landslip. Emergency measures were previously put in place to stabilise the area and divert water to prevent further deterioration.

Officials say the repair programme is expected to take around 12 weeks, with the goal of reopening the road before the start of the summer holidays, when the area sees a significant increase in visitors.

Extensive surveys and investigations have been carried out over recent months to determine the most effective solution. The planned works include strengthening the slope using steel reinforcements, installing protective mesh, and rebuilding parts of the embankment and road surface.

A new retaining wall, designed to blend with the natural landscape, will also be constructed, along with improvements to drainage systems to reduce the risk of future landslips. Authorities emphasized that the project has been carefully designed to both stabilise the road and preserve the surrounding environment.

The route is an important link for both residents and tourists traveling through the Lake District, and local officials expressed optimism that the repairs will restore access in time for the peak travel season.
