Whitehaven Civic Hall Closes Immediately for Safety Works

14 May 2026 Whitehaven Civic Hall Closes Immediately for Safety Works

Whitehaven Civic Hall has been closed with immediate effect following the discovery of safety issues requiring urgent attention.

The decision was made by Cumberland Council in collaboration with the building’s operators after recent inspections found that current arrangements needed improvement.

The Lowther Street venue, which is owned by the council and operated by the Rosehill Youth Theatre trust, will now undergo essential works aimed at ensuring the safety of staff, visitors and tenants.

Despite the closure, Whitehaven Library, which is connected to the Civic Hall, will remain open and continue to operate as normal.

Officials have indicated that the necessary safety improvements will be carried out over the coming months, with hopes that the building could reopen during the summer if work progresses as planned.

The closure affects a number of scheduled events, and organisers are now working to arrange alternative venues where possible. Customers with bookings, including weddings, are being contacted and offered support to make new arrangements.

Council representatives stressed that the decision was not taken lightly but emphasised that public safety remains the top priority. In the longer term, the future of the Civic Hall will be considered as part of wider redevelopment plans for Whitehaven.
