Overnight Closure Planned for Northbound M6 as Major Works Continue

14 Jun 2026 Overnight Closure Planned for Northbound M6 as Major Works Continue

A section of the northbound M6 motorway in Cumbria will be closed overnight tonight as part of ongoing infrastructure improvements in the area.

National Highways confirmed that the northbound carriageway between Junction 39 at Shap and Junction 40 at Penrith will be closed from 8:00 p.m. on Sunday until 5:00 a.m. on Monday. The temporary closure is necessary to allow Network Rail to remove a safety barrier that was installed during earlier work to replace Clifton Bridge.

Officials said the work forms part of a wider programme aimed at improving transport infrastructure and ensuring the long-term safety of both road and rail users. Following completion of the barrier removal, a 50mph speed limit will remain in place through the roadworks area, while speed enforcement cameras currently operating on the route will also be removed.

During the closure, drivers will be diverted via the A6, where temporary speed restrictions will be implemented to help manage traffic safely. National Highways has urged motorists to allow extra travel time and plan their journeys in advance to avoid delays.

Access for emergency services will be maintained wherever possible throughout the operation, ensuring that essential vehicles can continue to respond to incidents if required.

The M6 is one of the UK's busiest motorway routes and serves as a key transport corridor linking northern England with Scotland. Authorities have thanked road users for their patience while the work is carried out and said the improvements are intended to enhance safety and reliability on the network.

Motorists are encouraged to check traffic updates before travelling and follow signed diversion routes while the overnight closure remains in place.
