MP updates residents as Bransty Tunnel works continue and Whitehaven Harbour discolouration persists

14 Apr 2026 MP updates residents as Bransty Tunnel works continue and Whitehaven Harbour discolouration persists

A West Cumbria MP has issued a fresh update on two long-running infrastructure and environmental issues affecting the area: the ongoing repairs to Bransty Railway Tunnel and the persistent discolouration of Whitehaven Harbour.

The Bransty Tunnel, part of the Cumbrian Coast Line, has been closed since 2025 while Network Rail carries out essential engineering works. The closure followed the discovery of unstable ground conditions and historic mine workings beneath the route, which have complicated repair efforts.

Rail replacement services remain in operation while engineers continue stabilisation and reconstruction work inside the tunnel. Authorities have not yet confirmed a final reopening date, though work is ongoing to restore the key transport link between Whitehaven and Cork ickle.

At the same time, concern continues over the orange-coloured water seen intermittently in Whitehaven Harbour. Investigations have linked the discolouration to iron-rich mine water seeping through drainage systems connected to the railway tunnel and entering the harbour via a culvert.

A taskforce involving local stakeholders, environmental agencies, and Network Rail continues to explore long-term solutions. One proposed option is to divert the contaminated water away from the harbour and out to sea through a new engineered pipeline, though this would require significant funding and further approvals.

The MP said progress is being made behind the scenes and that discussions with government ministers and agencies are ongoing to secure funding and agree a sustainable solution for both the tunnel repairs and harbour water issues.

Officials say that while the situation is complex, efforts remain focused on restoring reliable rail services and improving environmental conditions in the harbour area.
