Former Barrow Railway Station Listed Among UK’s Most Endangered Buildings

28 Apr 2026 Former Barrow Railway Station Listed Among UK’s Most Endangered Buildings

A former railway station in Barrow-in-Furness has been included in a national list of the UK’s most endangered historic buildings, sparking renewed calls for its preservation and reuse.

The building, known as the former Strand Railway Station, has been highlighted by the Victorian Society in its 2026 top 10 endangered buildings list. The organisation is urging that the site, located on Cavendish Dock Road, be brought back into active use before it deteriorates further.

The Victorian Society, which campaigns to protect historic architecture across England and Wales, described the inclusion as a warning sign of the risks facing important heritage sites due to neglect and lack of clear future plans.

Griff Rhys Jones, president of the society, emphasised the value of preserving such structures, particularly historic railway buildings. He noted that stations built during the Victorian era were often designed to be both functional and visually appealing and said reusing them represents a sustainable approach.

The former Strand station dates back to the 19th century and was once a key part of Barrow’s railway network before closing to passengers in the late 1800s. Over time, the building has been repurposed for other uses, including as a working men’s club, but it now stands at risk due to neglect.

Heritage advocates say the listing should act as a catalyst for investment and restoration efforts, ensuring the building can once again serve the community while preserving an important part of the town’s history.
