UKHSA Confirms Arrival of Hantavirus Contacts in UK for Monitoring

18 May 2026 UKHSA Confirms Arrival of Hantavirus Contacts in UK for Monitoring

Nine UK citizens connected to the MV Hoondis cruise ship outbreak have arrived in Britain after being identified as potential contacts of hantavirus cases during a recent international health incident.

The group, which includes individuals from UK Overseas Territories such as St Helena and Ascension Island, arrived under coordinated arrangements involving the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), and international health partners.

Upon arrival, the passengers were transferred to Arrowe Park Hospital in Wirral, Merseyside, where they will complete a precautionary self-isolation period of up to 45 days. During this time, they will be closely monitored by specialist NHS infectious disease teams and supported with regular medical assessments.

Health authorities stressed that none of the individuals currently show symptoms of hantavirus infection. The measures are being taken purely as a precaution due to potential exposure during the cruise ship outbreak.

The UKHSA said it continues to work with national and international partners to manage the situation and ensure the safety of both those involved and the wider public. Officials have repeatedly emphasized that the overall risk to the general population remains very low.

The hantavirus outbreak has been linked to the MV Hoondis cruise ship, which experienced confirmed and suspected cases among passengers and crew during an extended voyage, prompting multiple countries to implement tracing, quarantine, and repatriation measures.
