UK Pledges £20 Million to Help Fight Ebola Outbreak in Africa

21 May 2026 UK Pledges £20 Million to Help Fight Ebola Outbreak in Africa

The British government has pledged up to £20 million in aid to support the international response to a new Ebola outbreak in Central and East Africa.

The funding will assist health authorities and humanitarian organisations working to contain cases in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda amid growing concerns about the spread of the deadly virus.

According to UK officials, the financial support will be used to improve testing, vaccination programmes, treatment facilities and emergency medical response systems. Experts say rapid intervention is essential to prevent wider transmission, particularly in border regions where movement between countries can increase the risk of outbreaks escalating.

Health authorities in Uganda recently confirmed several Ebola cases linked to the Sudan strain of the virus, which currently has no licensed vaccine approved for widespread use. International agencies including the World Health Organization are working closely with regional governments to strengthen containment measures and monitor suspected infections.

UK ministers said the funding reflects Britain’s commitment to global health security and preventing future pandemics. Officials warned that outbreaks can quickly become international threats if not controlled early, highlighting lessons learned from previous Ebola crises in West and Central Africa.

Ebola is a severe and often fatal disease spread through direct contact with infected bodily fluids. Symptoms can include fever, weakness, vomiting and internal bleeding. Past outbreaks in Africa have caused thousands of deaths, although improved surveillance and faster medical responses have significantly increased survival rates in recent years.
