UK Must “Step Up” to Stop Russian Threat, Top Military Chief Warns
Air Chief Marshal Sir Richard Knighton, the UK’s chief of the defence staff, says Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has shown that President Vladimir Putin’s willingness to use force against neighbours now threatens all of NATO including the UK.
Speaking at a major defence event in London, Sir Richard urged not just the armed forces but the entire nation from industry to universities and public services to raise defence and resilience as national priorities. He compared the scale of current threats to those faced during the Cold War and warned that modern security challenges are even more unpredictable.
Meanwhile, MI6’s new head, Blaise Metreweli, echoed the warning, saying the frontline is “everywhere” as Russia uses hybrid tactics including cyber attacks and disinformation.
The unusual call to action comes amid increasing concern across NATO that without stronger deterrence, Russia’s aggression could escalate beyond Ukraine into broader conflict.
