UK Cinemas Consider Restrictions on Meta Smart Glasses

22 Aug 2026 UK Cinemas Consider Restrictions on Meta Smart Glasses

Cinemas across the UK are considering restrictions on Meta smart glasses amid growing concerns that the camera-equipped devices could be used to record films without permission.

The UK Cinema Association (UKCA) said many cinema operators are reviewing their policies on camera-enabled smart glasses, with some considering restrictions or outright bans.

The concerns centre on both film piracy and privacy. The glasses can take photographs and record video, potentially allowing someone to capture footage inside a cinema without other customers or staff being aware.

However, cinema operators are also considering the accessibility benefits of the technology. Meta's smart glasses can provide features such as personalised subtitles and other assistance that may help people with visual or hearing impairments.

Meta has defended the glasses, pointing out that a small light is designed to indicate when the camera is recording. The company also says its technology can provide important benefits for people who are blind or have low vision.

Despite these safeguards, concerns have increased following reports of people being recorded without their knowledge and growing fears that smart glasses could make unauthorised filming inside cinemas easier.

The issue is not limited to cinemas. Other UK entertainment and hospitality businesses, including theatres and pubs, have also introduced or considered restrictions on camera-enabled smart glasses.

The UKCA said the situation remains under review and that it will continue working with cinema operators to ensure their policies remain proportionate as the technology develops.
