Cumbrian MPs Split Over Future of Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer

14 May 2026 Cumbrian MPs Split Over Future of Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer

Cumbrian MPs have given differing verdicts on the future of Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, amid increasing political pressure following Labour’s recent electoral setbacks.

The Prime Minister is facing growing scrutiny after significant losses for Labour in local elections across the country, with reports suggesting that more than 80 MPs have expressed support for a potential leadership challenge.

Barrow and Furness Labour MP Michelle Scrogham urged stability, arguing that replacing the Prime Minister would not be the right response at this stage.

She said the government should focus on delivering its manifesto commitments, stressing that constant political change would not serve the national interest.

Scrogham added that voters were calling for action rather than further political disruption and warned that instability could undermine progress on key domestic and economic issues.

However, Tim Farron, Liberal Democrat MP for Westmorland and Lonsdale, offered a contrasting view, suggesting that the Prime Minister’s position may already be under serious threat.

He indicated that it appeared increasingly likely Sir Keir Starmer’s time in office could be nearing an end, reflecting broader uncertainty within Westminster over the Labour leader’s future.

The comments come as divisions within the Labour Party continue to deepen, with senior figures and backbench MPs reportedly split over whether the Prime Minister should remain in post or make way for new leadership.

The situation is expected to develop further in the coming days as internal party discussions continue and pressure from MPs intensifies.
