Young Mountain Biker Hospitalised After Serious Crash at Penrith’s Beacon
A young mountain biker has been taken to hospital following a serious crash in woodland near Penrith’s Beacon.
Penrith Mountain Rescue Team was called by the Northwest Ambulance Service at around 6.50pm on Tuesday, August 18, after receiving reports that a young rider had come off his bike in the woods.
The casualty had suffered significant injuries and was reportedly drifting in and out of consciousness while experiencing difficulty breathing.
Given the seriousness of the situation, mountain rescue volunteers were able to drive close to the crash site using one of the forest tracks, allowing them to reach the injured rider quickly.
Rescuers carefully stabilised the youngster using a vacuum mattress before providing pain relief and preparing him for evacuation.He was then placed on a stretcher and carried down to a waiting ambulance on Beacon Edge.
The injured rider was subsequently taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) in Newcastle for further hospital treatment.
Penrith Mountain Rescue Team thanked those involved in the response and wished the youngster a full and speedy recovery.
The incident highlights the important role played by mountain rescue volunteers in responding to serious accidents in difficult-to-access areas across Cumbria.
