YACHTSMAN RESCUED TWICE IN 48 HOURS AFTER SECOND INCIDENT OFF CUMBRIA COAST
A yachtsman has been rescued for the second time in less than 48 hours after his six metre yacht ran into difficulty while navigating Walney Channel, prompting another emergency response from volunteer RNLI crews.
The incident unfolded at around 3.10pm on Tuesday when HM Coastguard requested assistance after the yacht encountered problems while travelling from Roa Island to Fleetwood. Strong south westerly winds made it difficult for the vessel to safely navigate the channel, leading to the launch of the Barrow RNLI inshore lifeboat shortly afterwards.
When the volunteer crew reached the scene, they discovered it was the same yacht they had assisted less than 48 hours earlier. After assessing the situation, a tow line was attached and the vessel was safely brought to Piel Bight, where it was secured to a safe mooring to prevent further danger.
The yachtsman was then transported back to the lifeboat station, where members of the Furness Coastguard team met him and provided safety advice. Officials reminded recreational sailors of the importance of understanding weather conditions, tidal movements and the limitations of their vessels before setting out on the water.
The RNLI said its volunteer crews remain committed to responding whenever they are called upon to protect lives at sea. However, the organisation also stressed that those using the coastline should carefully assess prevailing weather and sea conditions before beginning any journey, particularly during periods of stronger winds.
Maritime safety experts continue to encourage boat owners to carry appropriate safety equipment, ensure their vessels are seaworthy and have reliable communication devices available in case of an emergency. Careful passage planning and checking marine forecasts before departure can significantly reduce the risk of incidents requiring rescue.
