WWII Artillery Shell Found at Cockermouth Arts Centre

22 Aug 2026 WWII Artillery Shell Found at Cockermouth Arts Centre

A World War Two artillery shell has been discovered at Cockermouth’s Kirkgate Centre during preparations for an upcoming heritage event.

The brass shell was found by members of the town’s heritage group and centre staff while they were checking and cataloguing historical artefacts ahead of an open day planned for September 12.

Cumbria Police were called to the scene and requested assistance from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Regiment based at Catterick.

Staff and people in nearby properties faced a nervous wait of around two hours while specialists examined the historic item. The bomb disposal experts eventually confirmed that the shell was completely safe, as its internal mechanisms had already been removed.

Kirkgate Centre chief executive Emma Heys said the discovery had certainly made the routine audit more eventful, while praising the police and army specialists for ensuring everyone remained safe.

The centre is home to the Cockermouth Heritage Group’s collection, which includes objects, photographs, maps and memorabilia documenting the history of the town and surrounding area.

The discovery comes ahead of a special heritage event at the Kirkgate Centre on Saturday, September 12, running from 10am until 4pm. The event forms part of a national programme taking place across the UK from September 11 to 20.

Visitors will have the opportunity to view a selection of historic items and displays chosen by heritage volunteers. Entry will be free, with refreshments also available.
