Workington Roadworks to Continue Until Autumn Under £10m Upgrade

Workington Roadworks to Continue Until Autumn Under £10m Upgrade

Workington is set to face several more months of disruption as roadworks linked to the £10 million Workington Gateway project continue through to autumn. The scheme, led by Cumberland Council, is designed to improve road safety, strengthen transport links and enhance access to key employment areas including the Port of Workington.
The project includes significant upgrades to the A66 and A596 junction at Ramsay Brow, as well as improvement works along Hall Brow between the police headquarters and Workington Bridge. The improvements aim to make journeys smoother, particularly for heavy goods vehicles and freight traffic using the route.
Phase two of the project is due to begin later this month following delays during the first phase caused by utility diversions. Temporary traffic lights remain in place, and further traffic management measures will be introduced as work progresses.
Drivers can expect a one way northbound system on parts of the A596 during the early stages of the next phase. Southbound traffic will be diverted via Northside Road, Northside Bridge and the A597. Residents in nearby areas may also experience temporary access and parking changes while works are carried out.
Council leaders have acknowledged the inconvenience but say the long term benefits will outweigh the disruption. The scheme is expected to modernise a key gateway into the town, support local businesses and improve everyday travel for residents.
