Workington Reds Skipper Brad Carroll Suffers Broken Ankle In Warrington Draw

08 Oct 2026 Workington Reds Skipper Brad Carroll Suffers Broken Ankle In Warrington Draw

Workington Reds extended their unbeaten league run to eight matches, but suffered a major setback when skipper Brad Carroll broke his ankle.

Workington travelled to Warrington Town looking to continue their strong run of league form and made an excellent start to the contest. The visitors controlled much of the opening 25 minutes and created the better opportunities before Carroll put them ahead. However, the captain was forced from the field after an accidental collision left him with a serious injury to his left ankle. His departure had a major impact on the game, with Warrington taking control before half time.

Carroll had made an important contribution before being injured and had given Workington the lead after only 12 minutes. Jake Allan delivered a corner towards the near post, where Carroll managed to make contact and guide the ball through a crowded penalty area. The finish gave the Reds an early advantage and reflected their strong opening to the match. Carroll had also been influential in recent weeks after working his way back towards his best form following difficulties during pre season.

The injury occurred during an accidental collision involving Brennan Dickenson and Warrington player Harry McHugh. Dickenson had challenged McHugh for the ball, with McHugh subsequently falling onto Carroll as the Workington captain attempted to continue the play. Carroll's left ankle took the impact and he was unable to continue. He was carried from the pitch in considerable discomfort before being taken to hospital for further assessment.

The confirmation of a broken ankle represents a significant blow for Workington, particularly given Carroll's importance to the side. Manager Billy Barr later indicated that the skipper could be unavailable for roughly nine to 12 weeks, potentially keeping him out well into the new year. Barr said he was particularly disappointed for Carroll because the midfielder had begun to rediscover his form after dealing with several niggles during pre season.

Carroll's departure also changed the momentum of the match. Workington had been the stronger side during the opening stages, but Warrington found a way back into the contest after the captain left the field. The hosts equalised in the 43rd minute when substitute Callum Edwards received the ball in space and fired an angled effort into the bottom corner. The goal gave Warrington renewed confidence as the home side looked to take advantage of the disruption.

The situation became even more difficult for Workington during first half stoppage time. Ewan Bange found space beyond the visitors' defence and finished confidently to put Warrington ahead shortly before the interval. The turnaround meant Workington went from controlling the opening stages to trailing 2-1 at half time. Barr was unhappy with the way his players had allowed the match to change and challenged them to show greater courage and determination during the second half.

Workington responded positively after the break and gradually regained their composure. The visitors created opportunities to level the contest while Warrington also threatened to increase its advantage. Josh Palmer went close with two attempts, while Jake Allan also had an opportunity from a free kick. At the opposite end, Harry McHugh missed a chance to extend Warrington's lead, leaving Workington within reach of rescuing something from a match that had begun to move away from them.

The equaliser eventually arrived through Brennan Dickenson with 15 minutes remaining. The forward collected possession towards the left before cutting inside onto his less favoured right foot and producing an outstanding long range finish. His effort from around 25 yards travelled beyond goalkeeper Mateusz Hewelt and into the far corner, bringing Workington level at 2-2. The goal completed an important individual performance from Dickenson and gave the visitors renewed belief of taking something from the match.

Barr praised Dickenson for his contribution and the experience he brought to a side dealing with several injuries. The manager said the forward had produced an outstanding overall performance and had helped younger players through the difficult stages of the match. His equaliser proved particularly valuable because Workington had lost Carroll earlier in the contest and had been forced to adjust their approach after the captain's departure.

The result means Workington have now gone eight league matches without defeat, maintaining an impressive run despite the latest injury setback. However, the point came at a considerable cost because Carroll has become the latest long term absentee from an already stretched squad. The club will now need to assess its options ahead of the next fixture while continuing to manage the growing number of players unavailable through injury and other concerns.

The injury situation has already created difficulties for Barr and his coaching staff. Goalkeeper Alex Mitchell has recently dealt with a head injury following a clash, while Luke Ellis and Charlie Barnes have also been affected by concussion related protocols. The growing list of unavailable players is placing additional pressure on the remaining squad members, particularly with competitive fixtures continuing through the autumn schedule.

Barr may therefore need to look towards the club's younger players as Workington prepare for their next league fixture. Members of the Under 23 squad could be considered for involvement as the Reds attempt to maintain their momentum while dealing with the loss of several experienced players. The next match will be Workington's first meeting with league newcomers Quorn, providing another test for a side that has been forced to adapt repeatedly because of injuries.

Despite the disappointment surrounding Carroll's injury, Workington showed considerable resilience by recovering from their first half collapse and securing a point. The Reds had allowed Warrington to turn a dominant opening into a 2-1 deficit, but they responded strongly after the interval and continued competing until the final stages. Dickenson's equaliser ensured their unbeaten run remained intact and provided some reward for their second half performance.

The draw also demonstrated the importance of maintaining concentration throughout the full 90 minutes. Workington had appeared in control before Carroll's injury, but the disruption contributed to a difficult period before half time. Barr's response at the interval helped restore some of the determination that had been evident during the opening stages, allowing the Reds to regain their structure and compete more effectively after the break.

Warrington still had opportunities to win the match after Workington levelled, with late pressure and set pieces creating moments of danger. Workington managed those final stages more effectively than they had the closing minutes of the first half, with the defence holding firm when required. The final score left both teams with a point, although Workington will view the result differently given the circumstances surrounding Carroll's injury and the way the match developed.

For Carroll, the immediate focus will now be on recovering from the broken ankle and beginning the rehabilitation process. His absence is likely to leave a significant gap in the Workington squad, particularly because of his leadership responsibilities as captain. The club will hope that his recovery progresses well and that he can eventually return to the side after overcoming the injury.

Workington's unbeaten league record provides a positive backdrop despite the setback. The Reds have demonstrated consistency across their recent fixtures and remain capable of competing strongly while the squad deals with its current problems. Barr and his players will now have to find ways of maintaining that form without Carroll, while also monitoring the condition of other injured players.

The 2-2 draw therefore delivered mixed emotions for Workington. The team showed character by recovering from a losing position and securing another point, but the result was overshadowed by the serious injury suffered by their captain. With Carroll expected to spend a significant period on the sidelines, the Reds face another challenge as they attempt to extend their unbeaten run and navigate an increasingly demanding injury situation.
