Workington Reds Captain Dav Symington Announces Retirement
Workington Reds captain Dav Symington has confirmed his retirement from football, bringing an end to an outstanding career with the Cumbrian club. The 32-year-old departs after 11 seasons in red, during which he became one of the most influential and admired figures in the club’s modern history.
Symington made 296 starts for Workington AFC along with 54 substitute appearances, scoring 113 competitive goals many of them memorable long-range strikes that quickly became fan favourites. He also added 19 goals in noncompetitive matches and established himself as both a leader on the pitch and a respected presence in the dressing room.
In a statement announcing his retirement, the club praised Symington’s contribution over the past decade, describing him as a talismanic player whose influence extended far beyond his performances on matchdays. Officials highlighted his commitment, professionalism and leadership qualities, saying his legacy at Borough Park “will take some replacing.”
Symington first joined the Reds during the 2014/15 season on loan from Carlisle United before returning permanently in 2016. Over the years he became synonymous with Workington AFC, helping the club through promotion battles, memorable cup runs and difficult periods alike.
The midfielder enjoyed one of his finest campaigns during the 2023/24 season when he finished among the top scorers in the Northern Premier League and collected multiple end-of-season awards, including Players’ Player of the Year and Supporters’ Player of the Year.
In recent months Symington had struggled with injury problems, including an operation earlier this year that limited his appearances. Despite hopes of a return, the club legend has now decided to step away from the game, ending one of the most successful and respected careers in Workington Reds’ recent history.
