Workington Comets Face Tough Task After Heavy KO Cup Defeat

26 Apr 2026 Workington Comets Face Tough Task After Heavy KO Cup Defeat

Workington Comets have left themselves with a difficult challenge in their KO Cup tie following a heavy defeat in the first leg against Berwick Bandits.

The Comets were beaten 58–32 away from home, a result that gives them a 26-point deficit to overturn in the return leg at their home track. The visitors struggled throughout the meeting, managing only a handful of race wins and falling behind early as Berwick built a commanding lead.

The Bandits made a strong start, racing into a 25–5 advantage after the opening five heats, putting the Comets under immediate pressure. Although Workington showed some improvement in the middle stages and finished stronger, the damage had already been done.

Jonas Jeppesen led the scoring for the Comets with nine points, while guest rider Dylan Wood also contributed positively with eight points. Craig Cook and Tate Zischke provided the only other race victories for the visiting side.

Berwick’s Peter Kildemand produced a dominant performance, scoring a maximum 12 points from four rides, while the home side-maintained control for most of the fixture.

Workington also suffered a setback when Danish rider Niklas Holm Jakobsen was withdrawn after a crash, adding to their difficulties on the night.

Despite a late rally, the Comets now face a significant uphill task in the second leg as they aim to keep their KO Cup hopes alive in front of their home supporters.
