Woman avoided paying for Lake District stays by falsely claiming cancer and family deaths

A woman who dishonestly obtained accommodation in the Lake District by fabricating serious personal tragedies, including claims she was suffering from cancer, has appeared in court.

Sarah Louise Green, 44, carried out a series of fraudulent bookings at holiday properties in the Windermere area, where she stayed without paying for the services provided.

The court heard that Green used emotional manipulation to avoid payment, telling accommodation owners that she had been diagnosed with cancer and was undergoing treatment. She also falsely claimed that members of her family, including her grandparents and uncle, had died in tragic circumstances.

Prosecutors said she made multiple bookings between September and November 2024, running up thousands of pounds in unpaid accommodation costs. In total, her actions caused significant financial losses to at least three property owners.

Green also allegedly sent messages designed to reinforce her claims, including emotional pleas and false explanations for delayed payments.

Victims told the court they were left in severe financial difficulty and emotional distress after being misled by her repeated lies.

During sentencing at Carlisle Crown Court, the judge described her behaviour as “deliberate and dishonest,” noting that she exploited the goodwill of accommodation providers by inventing serious medical and family emergencies.

Green was sentenced to a suspended prison term and ordered to carry out unpaid work, complete rehabilitation requirements, and repay compensation to the victims.
