Windermere Ferry Closed to Vehicles for One Day Due to Roadworks

26 Jun 2026 Windermere Ferry Closed to Vehicles for One Day Due to Roadworks

Motorists travelling through the Lake District are being warned that the Windermere Ferry will be inaccessible to vehicles for one day as essential road improvement works take place on the road leading to the crossing.

The temporary closure is necessary to allow highway crews to carry out planned maintenance and resurfacing work on the approach road, ensuring it remains safe and in good condition for future use. During the works, vehicles will be unable to reach or board the ferry, although authorities are advising drivers to follow signed diversion routes to complete their journeys.

Local officials said the closure is expected to last for a single day, with the road scheduled to reopen once the maintenance work has been completed and safety inspections have been carried out.

The Windermere Ferry is one of the Lake District’s most popular transport links, connecting the eastern and western shores of Lake Windermere. It provides a convenient crossing for residents, businesses, commuters, and thousands of tourists visiting the national park each year. The temporary suspension of vehicle access is therefore expected to result in longer journey times for drivers who will need to travel around the lake using alternative routes.

Pedestrians and cyclists may still be able to use the ferry service during the closure, depending on operational conditions, although travellers are advised to check the latest service updates before setting out.

Highway authorities have apologised for the inconvenience and stressed that the works are essential to improve the condition of the road and ensure long-term safety for all users. They have asked motorists to plan their journeys in advance, allow additional travel time, and follow all temporary traffic signs and diversion routes.

Residents and local businesses have been notified of the planned works, with emergency services and public transport operators also informed to help minimise disruption. Access for emergency vehicles will be maintained where necessary throughout the maintenance period.

The roadworks form part of a wider programme of highway improvements being carried out across Cumbria to enhance transport infrastructure and reduce future maintenance requirements. Officials said carrying out the work now will help prevent more extensive repairs and longer closures later.

Drivers intending to travel through the area are encouraged to check traffic updates before leaving home and consider alternative routes if travelling during the closure. Authorities thanked residents, visitors, and businesses for their patience and cooperation while the essential maintenance is completed.

The ferry and surrounding road network are expected to return to normal operation once the work has been safely completed.
