Wet And Windy Conditions Set To Give Way To Milder Cumbria Weather
Cumbria is facing several unsettled days, with heavy rain and strong winds before conditions gradually become calmer towards the weekend.
The weather begins relatively mild across the county, with western coastal areas expected to reach around 20C during the day. Whitehaven and Workington are among the warmest locations, while inland and higher areas such as Alston remain cooler at around 15C. The milder conditions will not last, however, as increasingly heavy rain is expected to move across the county later, bringing a marked change to the weather overnight.
Wednesday is expected to be particularly wet, with persistent rain and heavy showers affecting much of Cumbria. Temperatures will remain relatively mild, reaching around 19C in some locations, while the chance of rainfall will be especially high across the fells. The combination of wet conditions and stronger winds is likely to make exposed areas feel unsettled throughout the day, with limited opportunities for prolonged dry spells across the county.
Temperatures are forecast to fall noticeably on Thursday as the unsettled weather continues. Highs are expected to be around 15C in many parts of Cumbria, with showers remaining widespread and western areas facing some of the highest rainfall chances. Egremont, for example, has a forecast rain probability of around 68 per cent, while Appleby further east is expected to have a lower chance of showers at approximately 36 per cent.
Friday is expected to remain cool and breezy, with scattered showers continuing across the county. Temperatures should generally remain between 15C and 16C, although conditions will vary from one part of Cumbria to another. Western locations are expected to retain a higher likelihood of rainfall, while some eastern areas may experience longer dry periods. The overall pattern will remain unsettled, but the intensity of the earlier wet weather should gradually ease.
By Saturday, the forecast suggests a noticeable improvement across much of Cumbria. Rainfall chances are expected to fall considerably, with some areas seeing only a small chance of showers. Temperatures will remain around the mid-teens, meaning the weather will be cooler than at the start of the period but potentially more comfortable because of the reduced rainfall and lighter conditions.
Along the west coast, Whitehaven and Workington are expected to experience some of the highest temperatures during the opening part of the forecast period. Both locations are forecast to reach around 20C before heavy rain develops overnight. Workington has a rainfall chance of approximately 96 per cent overnight, while Whitehaven is similarly expected to experience heavy downpours before cooler conditions arrive later in the week.
Further inland, Carlisle is also expected to see a mild start, with temperatures approaching 20C before the weather turns significantly wetter. The city has a forecast rainfall chance of around 94 per cent overnight, followed by another wet day on Wednesday with temperatures reaching approximately 19C. Conditions are then expected to become cooler on Thursday and Friday before rainfall chances fall sharply towards Saturday.
In the south of the county, Barrow is expected to reach around 18C before heavy rain develops overnight. Thursday and Friday are forecast to remain cooler, with temperatures around 16C and continued showers. The coastal position means stronger winds may also make conditions feel more unsettled at times, although the forecast points towards a much drier pattern arriving by Saturday as rainfall becomes less likely.
Kendal is expected to see temperatures around 18C at the start of the period, followed by heavy rain overnight and another wet day on Wednesday. Wednesday could reach around 19C, although the chance of showers remains high. Temperatures then fall to approximately 15C on Thursday before reaching around 16C on Friday, with rainfall chances remaining elevated before conditions begin to improve during the weekend.
The Lake District is also expected to experience a wet and unsettled spell. Keswick could reach around 19C initially, but heavy overnight downpours are expected, followed by further rain on Wednesday. Temperatures then fall to around 15C on Thursday and Friday, with showers remaining likely. The forecast indicates a significant improvement by Saturday, when rainfall chances are expected to fall and conditions become considerably drier.
Elsewhere, towns including Cockermouth, Cleator Moor, Egremont, Maryport and Silloth are also expected to experience heavy rain during the wetter part of the forecast. Cockermouth could reach around 19C before a very wet night, while Cleator Moor and Egremont are expected to see temperatures close to 19C before cooler conditions arrive. Maryport and Silloth are also forecast to become drier towards the weekend after several unsettled days.
Eastern and inland areas are likely to see some differences from the wetter conditions in western Cumbria. Appleby is expected to remain comparatively drier on Thursday and Friday, with shower probabilities of roughly 36 to 43 per cent, while Penrith should also see rainfall chances fall towards Saturday. Alston will remain one of the cooler locations, with temperatures dropping to around 13C on Thursday and Friday before a generally drier weekend develops.
Other parts of the county, including Ambleside, Aspatria, Brampton, Dalton-in-Furness, Grange-over-Sands, Millom, Sedbergh, Ulverston, Wigton and Windermere, are expected to follow a broadly similar pattern. Mild temperatures at the beginning of the period will give way to rain and cooler conditions before the weekend brings a gradual improvement. Rainfall probabilities vary between locations, reflecting the differences between Cumbria's coastal, western, eastern and upland areas.
Overall, the five-day outlook points to a clear transition from mild but increasingly wet weather towards cooler and more settled conditions. The heaviest rainfall is expected during the middle of the period, while temperatures fall from locally around 20C to the mid-teens. By Saturday, most parts of Cumbria should see significantly lower rainfall chances, although cloudy skies and occasional showers may still affect some locations.
The forecast highlights how quickly conditions can vary across Cumbria, particularly between exposed coastal areas, inland towns and higher ground.
