Walkers Rescued After Setting Out With Only a Small Torch
LAKE DISTRICT — A pair of walkers were rescued after becoming disoriented and stranded as night fell on Thursday, April 2, having begun their hike with minimal equipment.
The Keswick Mountain Rescue Team, which was conducting a training session at its base, was alerted at about 8.05pm when the two men called 999 to say they were lost, three hours from their vehicle and stuck in snowy conditions.
Despite poor mobile reception, police were able to trace the callers’ location to Calf Cove on Great End. Rescue teams set out from Seathwaite and also prepared support from Wasdale and Langdale Ambleside mountain rescue teams to cover likely routes.
Fortunately, the Keswick team encountered the pair on the descent the walkers had made their own way down using only a small torch they had picked up from a service station before setting out.
The rescue team noted that the incident reflects a growing trend of ill-prepared hikers tackling challenging terrain without adequate gear, often influenced by social media trends rather than proper planning.
Teams shared the story to raise awareness and encourage better preparation among walkers, rather than to cast judgment on those involved.
