05 Apr 2026 Vulcan Park Bowling Club Marks 100 Years of Play

WORKINGTON Vulcan Park Bowling Club has reached a major milestone, celebrating 100 years of play with an official season launch that saw the town’s mayor, David Farrar, roll the first bowl to mark the occasion.

The centenary event featured a reading by local poet John Hasting commemorating the club’s long history, followed by a warm welcome from officials and members alike. Organisers said this year’s programme of events will focus on expanding participation and showcasing the friendly, inclusive spirit that has defined the club for a century.

Club chairman Allan Litt highlighted the growth already seen, noting that two mixed triples teams now play on Tuesdays a sign of increasing interest in the sport locally. He emphasised that the bowling green is open to all residents, with Monday night sessions available for anyone wanting to try the game, whether they join the club or simply enjoy the outdoor activity.

Supported by Workington Town Council, the centenary year will include a bowlathon on June 17, where participants aim to roll as many ends as possible over a 12-hour period from 9am to 9pm. Local groups such as the Royal British Legion’s women’s section, Cumbria Fire and Rescue, and the North West Ambulance Service are among those expected to take part.

Organisers plan to involve more organisations, businesses and individuals in upcoming celebrations, reinforcing the club’s role as a vibrant hub of community sport.
