Vandals Cause £8,000 Worth Of Damage To 26 Street Lights In Cockermouth

Twenty six street lights have been deliberately damaged in Cockermouth, leaving repair costs estimated at around £8,000 for local authorities.

The vandalism was discovered across several areas of Cockermouth, where offenders damaged equipment attached to a total of 26 street lighting columns. The incidents are believed to have occurred over a short period and have significantly disrupted the town's lighting network. 

According to Cumberland Council, the damage will cost approximately £8,000 to repair. Engineers have begun assessing the affected lights and arranging repairs, although some may remain out of service until replacement parts become available. 

Council officials condemned the vandalism, describing it as a needless act that wastes public money and diverts resources away from other essential services. They warned that damaged street lighting can also reduce visibility for drivers and pedestrians, increasing safety risks during the hours of darkness. 

Police are investigating the incidents and are appealing for anyone who witnessed suspicious behaviour or has relevant CCTV, doorbell camera, or dashcam footage to come forward. Officers hope information from the public will help identify those responsible.

Residents have also been urged to report any further damage or faults to street lighting as soon as possible so repairs can be arranged promptly. Authorities said community support is vital in preventing further incidents of criminal damage.
