Uppies and Downies 2026: Safety advice issued ahead of traditional Workington games
As the Uppies and Downies tradition returns to Workington this Good Friday, police and local partner agencies are urging everyone attending or watching the historic no-rules mass football games to prioritise safety.
The first of three matches in the 2026 series begins on Friday evening, followed by further fixtures on April 7 and April 11. With large crowds expected, Cumbria police have confirmed that additional officers and support resources will be deployed throughout the events to help ensure public safety.
Officials are advising those involved and spectators alike to be mindful of their surroundings, especially near water, and to look out for one another. Local communities have also been encouraged to consider where they park vehicles to avoid damage during busy event periods.
Parents are being asked to talk to their children about the safety guidance before attending, and everyone is reminded that large gatherings, particularly after dark, can increase the risk of minor injuries such as trips, sprains and bruises.
Organisers stress that while the event has no formal organiser, collaborative planning between emergency services and community groups aims to make this year’s Uppies and Downies both enjoyable and safe for all.
