Two Walkers Lucky to Escape on Scafell Pike
LAKE DISTRICT Two walkers were fortunate to make it down safely from Scafell Pike after becoming stranded, cold and unable to move due to poor preparation on Saturday.
The Northwest Ambulance Service alerted the Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team when the pair reported they were stuck above Broad Crag Col. Initial attempts to reach them by helicopter were thwarted by deteriorating weather, forcing crews to proceed on foot.
Wasdale volunteers were joined by colleagues from Duddon & Furness and Cockermouth teams to assist in bringing the walkers off the mountain. As rescuers gathered, the pair managed to warm up enough to walk down under their own steam, enabling the additional teams to stand down.
Once safely off the fell, the walkers were taken to a secure location where they could arrange transport back to Seathwaite. Rescue teams later returned to base to reset equipment and vehicles after the operation. Mountain rescue officials warned that the incident highlights the dangers of attempting high-level routes without adequate preparation and equipment, especially in areas with poor mobile phone reception.
