Two Men from Doncaster Arrested in Ambleside on Suspicion of Preparing to Target Lake District Businesses

Two men from South Yorkshire have been arrested in the Lake District after police stopped their vehicle in Ambleside during a late-night patrol and raised concerns about their intentions.
Officers from South Lakes Police intercepted the car shortly after 3:30am on Saturday, 28 December, on Vicarage Road. The stop took place during a routine nightshift patrol, when officers became uneasy following an initial conversation with the vehicle’s occupants.
Police carried out searches of both the men and the vehicle, during which officers reportedly discovered several items that led them to believe the pair may have been preparing to commit theft-related offences.
Both men, who are understood to be living in the Doncaster area, were arrested on suspicion of going equipped for theft. They remain in custody at Kendal Police Station while further investigations and interviews are ongoing.
In a statement shared on social media, a spokesperson for South Lakes Police said officers believe the suspects may have been scouting commercial properties in the area. Police are now appealing for information from local business owners and residents.
“We are keen to hear from anyone who noticed suspicious activity overnight or who may have relevant CCTV footage from the Ambleside, Grasmere or Windermere areas,” the spokesperson said.
The Lake District attracts large numbers of visitors year-round, and police regularly carry out proactive patrols during night-time hours to deter crime and protect local businesses, particularly during busy holiday periods.
Anyone with information that could assist the investigation is asked to contact Cumbria Police on 101 and quote reference number CP-20251228-0039
