TV show winner helps rescue stranded pensioners from floodwater

26 Mar 2026 TV show winner helps rescue stranded pensioners from floodwater

A former reality television champion has been hailed a hero after helping to rescue four pensioners stranded in a car during severe flooding in west Cumbria.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, March 24, on a main road in Seaton, near Workington, where a vehicle became trapped in rapidly rising floodwater.

Matthew Heywood, known for winning Survivor UK in 2023, spotted the car while passing through the area and immediately stepped in to help.

Without hesitation, he entered the water and began pulling the vehicle towards safety. He was soon joined by his brother and several local residents, who worked together to free the car and assist the occupants.

Four elderly people were inside the vehicle at the time, with conditions reportedly worsening quickly as the water level rose.

Speaking after the rescue, Heywood said he felt compelled to act when he realised the danger, describing how the situation was escalating rapidly.

The dramatic rescue has been widely praised as an example of strong community spirit, with locals commending those involved for their bravery and quick thinking.

Following the incident, a local business offered free vehicle servicing to those who took part in the rescue in recognition of their efforts.

Heywood, who became the youngest-ever global winner of the Survivor format, has since gained a large following on social media, but this latest act has earned him recognition beyond the screen.
