Trial to Use Electric Weed Control Planned in North and West Cumbria
A trial using electrical equipment to control weeds is set to take place in north and west Cumbria as local authorities explore more environmentally friendly alternatives to traditional weedkillers.
Cumberland Council officials have confirmed that the trial will assess how effective the method is compared to current practices. The council currently relies on the herbicide glyphosate, which has been the subject of ongoing debate, with some councillors calling for greener solutions.
Members of the council’s highways and transport board were informed that weed control operations, including spraying, will continue across thousands of kilometres of roads between April and September. However, the new electric method will be tested to evaluate both its cost and effectiveness in eliminating weeds.
Councillors have welcomed the trial, describing it as a positive step toward more sustainable weed management. The locations for the trial are still under discussion, but it is expected to take place within selected areas of the region.
Officials also noted that weed control is essential for maintaining road safety by improving visibility at junctions and preventing damage to pavements, while also addressing legally controlled invasive plants.
