Tour of Britain Women Delivers Dramatic Opening Stage in Cumbria
Lorena Wiebes claimed victory in the opening stage of the Lloyds Tour of Britain Women after an action-packed day of racing through Cumbria.
The Team SD Worx–Protime rider secured the first leader’s jersey after winning a fast-paced sprint finish in Cockermouth.
The stage began along the Cumbrian coast, where Leila Gschwentner briefly broke away from the main group before being caught ahead of the first intermediate sprint at Allonby.
Large crowds turned out along the route as the race travelled through north and west Cumbria, with riders receiving strong support from spectators.
A major breakaway developed with less than 90 kilometres remaining when the youngest rider in the race, Arabella Blackburn, attacked and was joined by Audrey De Keersmaeker of Team Picnic PostNL. The pair built an advantage of almost three minutes.
However, Blackburn's breakaway was disrupted when she was stung by a bee on the climb towards Caldbeck, causing her to lose contact with De Keersmaeker.
De Keersmaeker went on to take maximum points on the Caldbeck climb before later being caught as the peloton closed in.
The race eventually came back together on the approach to the finishing circuit, setting up an exciting finale.
Rain began falling with less than 10 kilometres remaining as several riders launched attacks at the front. Team SD Worx–Protime controlled the peloton in the closing stages before Wiebes produced a powerful sprint to take the stage victory in Cockermouth.
Chiara Consonni finished second, while British rider Josie Nelson took third place.
Wiebes now leads the general classification by four seconds from Consonni, with Karlijn Swinkels a further second behind in third.
The opening stage provided a spectacular showcase for Cumbria, combining challenging climbs, dramatic racing and enthusiastic crowds along the route.
