Three Arrested as Police Launch Operation Targeting Dangerous Drivers

04 Apr 2026 Three Arrested as Police Launch Operation Targeting Dangerous Drivers

Police made three arrests on the first day of a major operation targeting unsafe drivers across Cumbria.

The initiative, known as Operation Spotlight, began on April 1 and focuses on the four main causes of serious road collisions: speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, failure to wear seatbelts, and driver distraction.

During the opening day, officers stopped a driver on the M6 near Hackthorpe who was found to be more than twice over the legal alcohol limit. He was arrested, charged with drink-driving, and is due to appear at Carlisle Magistrates’ Court later this month.

In a separate incident, a 50-year-old motorist was detained after testing positive for cannabis during a roadside drugs check. He was later released under investigation pending further test results.

Another driver, aged 46, was stopped near Burton-in-Kendal after concerns were raised about unsecured materials in a works van. He also tested positive for cannabis and was released under investigation while enquiries continue.

Police said the operation will continue throughout the month as officers step up enforcement efforts to improve road safety and reduce preventable accidents.
