Teenagers Praised for Helping Rescue Group on Striding Edge in Lake District

Teenagers Praised for Helping Rescue Group on Striding Edge in Lake District

Two young climbers are being commended for their quick thinking and bravery after assisting a group of hikers in difficulty on a snowy mountain ridge in the Lake District.
On January 10, 15‑year‑old Rowan Kay and 16‑year‑old Caelan Blades, both experienced in winter climbing, were descending Helvellyn via the narrow and exposed Striding Edge ridge when they encountered a group of five adults and a dog struggling in hazardous conditions.
The group were ill‑prepared for the conditions, wearing trainers and jeans and lacking essential winter kit such as gloves or crampons, despite snow and ice on the ridge. With professional rescue resources engaged elsewhere on the mountain, the teenagers along with two other prepared climbers stepped in to help guide the group to safety.
Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team has publicly praised the boys for their “strong mountain skills and maturity beyond their years” and invited them, along with their families, to visit the rescue base. During the visit, they were given a tour of the facilities and introduced to the specialist equipment used by volunteer rescuers.
A spokesperson for the team highlighted that mountain rescue services are available 24/7, fully equipped and trained for such conditions, and emphasised the importance of proper preparation before heading into the fells. The team also noted that the teenagers’ actions were inspiring and that they could one day become mountain rescuers themselves.
The incident has served as a reminder of the dangers of winter mountaineering and the need for hikers to carry appropriate clothing and equipment when exploring the Lake District’s high terrain.
