Steam Trains Set to Bring Festive Railway Journeys to Carlisle Before Christmas

05 Nov 2026 Steam Trains Set to Bring Festive Railway Journeys to Carlisle Before Christmas

Carlisle is set to welcome historic steam locomotives on several festive railway journeys as special services travel through Cumbria before Christmas.

One of the highlights will involve LNER A4 Pacific locomotive No. 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley, which is scheduled to operate several winter railtours during November and December. The locomotive will travel through Carlisle as part of journeys connecting England and Scotland, giving railway enthusiasts an opportunity to see one of Britain's best-known preserved steam engines operating on the national railway network.

The first major visit is scheduled between 26 and 29 November, when Sir Nigel Gresley will operate sections of a Steam Dreams journey to Edinburgh's Christmas Market. The locomotive is due to take over at York for the journey towards Edinburgh on 26 November. On the return journey on 29 November, it is scheduled to haul the train from Edinburgh to Carlisle via Carstairs.

The locomotive is also expected to operate a special lunchtime circular tour from Edinburgh on Saturday 28 November. The journey will take passengers around the Forth Estuary and across the famous Forth Rail Bridge before returning to the Scottish capital. The service forms part of the locomotive's winter programme and offers passengers the chance to experience a steam-hauled excursion through some of Scotland's best-known railway scenery.

Another December attraction is the Pennine Peaks Christmas Explorer, scheduled for 23 December. Sir Nigel Gresley is listed to haul this circular journey from Crewe, travelling through Lancashire and the Yorkshire Dales before returning to its starting point. The route includes sections of railway through the Lune Valley, Settle and the Ribble Valley, although this particular itinerary does not list Carlisle as a passenger destination.

The locomotive's winter programme is part of a wider series of heritage railway excursions organised by specialist operators. These journeys combine historic engines and vintage railway experiences with opportunities to visit popular Christmas destinations. Carlisle's position on the West Coast Main Line makes it an important point on several northbound and southbound steam-hauled routes.

Sir Nigel Gresley is an LNER A4-class steam locomotive, a design associated with the famous streamlined express trains of the 1930s. The engine returned to mainline operation following an overhaul and has since been used on a range of special railway tours. Its appearances remain popular among enthusiasts who follow the preservation and operation of historic locomotives.

The confirmed operating schedule is subject to change for operational reasons, and the locomotive's owners advise passengers and enthusiasts to check the latest information before making travel plans. The published programme identifies the dates and sections on which No. 60007 is expected to operate, but does not guarantee that every scheduled appearance will take place.
