Starmer Faces Backlash Over Burnham Block as UK Politics Heats Up

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer’s leadership has come under intense scrutiny after Labour’s National Executive Committee (NEC) voted to block Andy Burnham the popular Mayor of Greater Manchester from standing as the party’s candidate in the Gorton and Denton by-election scheduled for late February. The decision, taken by a majority of NEC members, has sparked backlash from MPs and local party figures, who warn it could hand the seat to political opponents and deepen divisions within Labour.
Burnham, a long-standing figure on the Labour left with strong regional support, said he was disappointed by the move and criticised the party’s handling of his bid to return to Parliament after serving as mayor. Critics argue that blocking his candidacy risks alienating voters and could be seen as a move to stifle an emerging internal rival to Starmer’s leadership.
The by-election itself triggered by the resignation of a former MP has become a crucial test for Labour’s electoral strength amid growing support for Nigel Farage’s Reform UK party, which has gained ground in recent polls. The contest is seen as a bellwether for wider political trends ahead of the May local elections and future national polls.
Adding to the shifting political landscape, former Conservative Home Secretary Suella Braverman has defected to Reform UK, boosting the party’s profile and highlighting fractures within the mainstream parties. Her move marks another blow to the Conservatives and reinforces Reform’s appeal to voters sceptical of the current government’s handling of issues like immigration and public services.
Meanwhile, Starmer has been on international engagements, including talks in Beijing aimed at strengthening economic ties, underscoring his broader strategy to position the UK as a global partner while navigating domestic political pressures.
As the political battle lines harden, Labour faces the dual challenge of holding together its own ranks while countering rising support for populist rivals a dynamic that could shape UK politics well beyond the next few months.
