SPEED CAMERA VANS TO OPERATE ACROSS CUMBRIA AS POLICE CONTINUE ROAD SAFETY ENFORCEMENT
Mobile speed camera vans will be operating at multiple locations across Cumbria today as part of ongoing efforts to improve road safety and reduce speeding offences.
Enforcement teams are scheduled to monitor a number of routes, including the A5087 between Barrow and Ulverston, Barrow, Walney, Kirkby in Furness, the A66 east of Penrith, Temple Sowerby, Culgaith, and the wider Penrith area. Drivers travelling through these locations are being reminded to remain within the posted speed limits.
The deployment forms part of a wider road safety strategy aimed at reducing collisions and encouraging safer driving behaviour across the county. Mobile enforcement locations are regularly rotated, with officers focusing on roads where speeding has previously been identified as a concern or where there is a heightened risk of serious accidents.
Police continue to stress that speed limits are designed to protect all road users, including motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians. They say compliance with speed restrictions plays a vital role in reducing both the likelihood of collisions and the severity of injuries when crashes occur.
Motorists caught exceeding the speed limit could face a £100 fixed penalty, three penalty points on their driving licence, or, depending on the circumstances, be offered a speed awareness course or required to attend court. More serious or repeat offences can result in higher fines, additional penalty points, or driving disqualification.
Drivers are encouraged to plan their journeys carefully, remain alert to changing speed limits, and adjust their speed according to traffic and road conditions. Officials emphasise that enforcement is intended to promote safer roads rather than simply issue penalties, with the ultimate goal of preventing avoidable collisions and saving lives.
