Speed Camera Vans Deployed Across Cumbria to Boost Road Safety

25 May 2026 Speed Camera Vans Deployed Across Cumbria to Boost Road Safety

Drivers across Cumbria are being warned to remain cautious behind the wheel today as mobile speed camera vans have been deployed at multiple locations throughout the county.

According to Cumbria Police, road safety camera units will be monitoring traffic on a number of key roads on Monday, May 25. The move forms part of the force’s wider campaign to tackle speeding and encourage safer driving habits among motorists.

The routes being targeted include the A689 between Hallbankgate and Nenthead, the A686 linking Alston and Penrith, and the A65 between Devil’s Bridge and Kendal. Enforcement officers are also operating along the M6 corridor between Junctions 38 and 35, as well as in the Milnthorpe and Kendal areas. Additional monitoring is taking place on the A591 route connecting Kendal and Ambleside.

Police say speeding continues to be one of the leading causes of serious road collisions across the region. Mobile camera vans are used not only to detect offenders but also to encourage drivers to slow down and remain alert, particularly on rural roads where conditions can quickly become dangerous.

Authorities are reminding motorists that speed limits are designed to protect all road users, including pedestrians, cyclists, and local residents. Drivers caught exceeding the limit could face fines, penalty points, or further legal action depending on the severity of the offence.

Road safety campaigns have become increasingly important in Cumbria due to the county’s mix of busy motorways, narrow rural roads, and tourist traffic, especially during weekends and holiday periods. Officials continue to urge motorists to drive responsibly, avoid distractions, and adapt their speed to weather and traffic conditions.

Cumbria Police regularly publish the locations of mobile enforcement units as part of a transparency policy aimed at preventing accidents rather than simply penalising drivers.
