Snow expected to hit Cumbria as yellow ice warning remains in place
Snow is expected to fall across parts of Cumbria tonight (Tuesday, January 6) as a yellow weather warning for ice remains in force across the county.
According to the Met Office forecast, snowfall is possible later this evening and into the early hours of Wednesday morning, January 7. The wintry conditions come as sub-zero temperatures continue to grip the region.
The yellow ice warning, issued by the Met Office, will remain in place until 10am on Wednesday. Forecasters have warned that icy patches are likely to form, which could lead to some disruption, particularly on untreated roads and pavements.
As temperatures remain below freezing, Cumbria Police have also issued safety advice for residents. The force is urging motorists to take extra care on the roads by reducing speed, allowing more time for journeys and maintaining a safe distance from other vehicles.
Members of the public are also being warned about the dangers of frozen water. Police have advised people to stay off lakes, rivers and ponds, stressing that ice can be extremely dangerous.
Pedestrians are being reminded that pavements may be slippery and are encouraged to wear suitable footwear to reduce the risk of falls. In addition, residents are being asked to check on vulnerable friends, family members and neighbours to ensure they are safe and warm during the cold spell.
A Cumbria Police spokesperson said conditions may be hazardous and urged everyone to take extra care while travelling and going about their daily routines as wintry weather continues across the county.
