Sleeping HGV Driver Crashes Through M6 Barrier, Narrowly Avoiding Oncoming Traffic.

02 Aug 2026 Sleeping HGV Driver Crashes Through M6 Barrier, Narrowly Avoiding Oncoming Traffic.

A lorry driver who reportedly fell asleep at the wheel caused a serious collision on the M6 after his heavy goods vehicle crossed the central reservation, narrowly avoiding oncoming traffic in an incident that could have had devastating consequences.

The crash occurred when the HGV left its carriageway and smashed through the motorway barrier before entering the central reservation. Fortunately, despite the severity of the collision, the vehicle narrowly missed cars travelling in the opposite direction, preventing what emergency services said could have been a major multi-vehicle disaster.

Emergency services attended the scene shortly after the incident, with police, firefighters, and paramedics responding to secure the area and assist those involved. Traffic was heavily disrupted while recovery teams removed the damaged lorry and repaired sections of the motorway barrier.

Investigators determined that the driver had fallen asleep while driving, causing him to lose control of the vehicle. Fatigue is recognised as one of the leading causes of serious motorway collisions, particularly among long-distance commercial drivers.

The driver later appeared before the court, where the circumstances surrounding the collision were examined. The court heard that the HGV had crossed into the central reservation, placing numerous motorists at risk. Although no oncoming vehicles were struck, the judge noted that the outcome could easily have been far more tragic.

Road safety experts continue to warn that driver fatigue can impair concentration, reaction times, and decision-making to a level comparable with drink driving. They advise motorists, particularly professional drivers covering long distances, to take regular breaks and avoid driving when tired.

Police also reminded motorists that if they begin to feel sleepy behind the wheel, they should leave the motorway at the next safe opportunity or stop at a service area to rest before continuing their journey. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by fatigue on high-speed roads. Thanks to a combination of luck and quick emergency response, no vehicles travelling in the opposite carriageway were struck, avoiding what could have become one of the motorway's most serious collisions.
