Sellafield Firefighters Take On 2,083-Step Charity Challenge
A team of Sellafield firefighters will take on a demanding charity challenge at Whitehaven’s Mount Pleasant steps this weekend.
Participants will climb the steps wearing full firefighting protective equipment, completing a total of 2,083 steps. The distance is equivalent to 110 floors, representing the height of the Twin Towers and providing a demanding physical challenge for those taking part.
The event is being held to mark the 25th anniversary of the attacks in New York on September 11, 2001. A total of 343 firefighters died during the attacks, and the Sellafield team wants the challenge to provide an opportunity to remember their sacrifice and the values demonstrated by firefighters around the world.
Sellafield firefighter Elliott Ennis-Wood said remembering those who died remains important because their actions demonstrated the dedication and selflessness associated with the profession. He said firefighters continue to share a commitment to helping others, including putting themselves at risk when responding to people in need.
The challenge will also raise money for the Fire Fighters Charity, which provides support to firefighters and their families. The organisation offers assistance in areas including rehabilitation, training, mental health and wellbeing, providing services to members of the fire services community throughout the year.
Some of the firefighters taking part have personal experience of the support provided by the charity. Injured personnel have benefited from rehabilitation services, while others have used its facilities during training or received support connected with their mental health and general wellbeing.
Eleven firefighters have already signed up for the challenge. The participants include Elliott Ennis-Wood, Macy Baker, Max Smith, Ava Gill, Maxwell Walker, David Currie, Mathew Aleixo, Chris Brown, Sean Fitzsimons, Shaun Agnew and Ryan Fitzwilliam.
More members of the crew are expected to join before the challenge gets under way. The physical demands of the event are considerable, with the planned route involving approximately 25 ascents and descents of Mount Pleasant Steps while participants remain in full firefighting personal protective equipment.
The protective clothing used by firefighters is designed to shield them from extreme heat during operational incidents, but it also retains body heat. This means participants are expected to face an additional physical strain during the climb, making preparation and hydration particularly important throughout the challenge.
The firefighters have been preparing through regular fitness work and use of their gym facilities. This includes a specialist stair-stepper machine designed to simulate continuous stair climbing, while everyone taking part has also successfully completed their annual fire service fitness assessment.
Members of the public are being encouraged to attend and support the firefighters during the challenge. Those visiting will have the opportunity to watch the participants, offer encouragement and speak with firefighters about the event and the wider role of the fire service.
Firefighters will also be available to answer questions and give visitors an opportunity to see some of the equipment and protective clothing used when crews respond to incidents. Organisers are also asking supporters to share information about the fundraiser online and consider making donations to the charity.
The event combines a physical test with a wider message about remembrance, service and support within the firefighting community. By taking on the demanding climb, the Sellafield team aims to honour the memory of those who died while also supporting an organisation that provides practical and wellbeing assistance to firefighters and their families.
The challenge is expected to draw attention from people across Whitehaven and the surrounding area, with members of the public able to show their support during the day. Donations and wider awareness generated by the event could help the charity continue providing services to people who work in the fire and rescue sector.
