Sellafield Engineer Jailed After Punch Leaves Man in Coma
A Sellafield engineer has been sentenced to prison after a violent one punch attack left another man seriously injured and fighting for his life.
The incident took place in Whitehaven, Cumbria, in the early hours of an April morning this year, when the engineer struck the victim in an apparent unprovoked attack. The force of the blow knocked the man to the ground, causing him to hit his head on the pavement. Emergency services were called, and the injured man was rushed to hospital where he was placed in a coma for several weeks due to catastrophic life changing injuries suffered in the assault.
At Carlisle Crown Court, the engineer pleaded guilty to a charge of grievous bodily harm. The court heard that the victim required extensive medical treatment, and police described the injuries as severe.
Following the guilty plea, the judge handed down a custodial sentence, reflecting the serious nature of the assault and its devastating impact on the victim’s life.
Cumbria Police said the case highlights how a single act of violence can have life altering consequences for individuals and their families.
