Sacred Heart Headteacher Welcomes Approval of New School Building in Barrow

The headteacher of Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School has welcomed the approval of plans for a new building in Barrow, describing the decision as a major milestone for the school community after a long period of disruption and uncertainty.

The school has been operating from temporary accommodation since its original building was closed after safety concerns. For families, pupils and staff, the planning decision marks a significant moment in the effort to provide a permanent home with modern learning facilities.

The approved project will see the construction of a two storey purpose built school on the existing site. Plans include new classrooms, a library, communal learning areas, play spaces and improved facilities designed to support children from nursery age through to primary school. The development is part of the Department for Education’s School Rebuilding Programme.

Speaking after the approval, the headteacher said the decision offers renewed hope for the future. The new building is expected to give pupils a safer and more modern environment while creating a stronger sense of stability for the wider school community.

Planning documents indicate demolition and redevelopment work is expected to begin during summer 2026, with the aim of opening the new school in September 2027.
