Resident doctors set to take strike action across England

02 Apr 2026 Resident doctors set to take strike action across England

Resident doctors across England are preparing to take strike action after talks with the government over pay and working conditions collapsed.

The strike, organised by the British Medical Association (BMA), is scheduled to run for six consecutive days from 7 to 13 April. The union announced the walkout after rejecting the government’s latest pay proposal, arguing that it does not adequately address years of real term pay decline.

According to union representatives, the offer which includes a pay rise spread over several years — fails to keep pace with inflation and would effectively leave doctors worse off. They say many medical professionals are already facing financial pressure and burnout, with some choosing to leave the UK for better opportunities abroad.

The dispute has been ongoing for months, with both sides unable to reach a compromise. Government officials maintain that their proposal is fair and affordable, while warning that continued strike action will put additional strain on the National Health Service (NHS).

Health leaders have expressed concern that the planned walkout could disrupt hospital services and delay patient care, especially as the NHS continues to deal with existing pressures.

Despite the escalating tensions, both the government and the BMA have indicated that they remain open to further negotiations in hopes of resolving the dispute before or during the strike period.
