Repeat Carlisle Drink-Driver Jailed After Crashing Into Couple’s Vehicle
A repeat drink-driver from Carlisle has been jailed after crashing into another vehicle driven by a couple, in an incident that left police highlighting the dangers of persistent road offences.
The court heard that the driver, who had a history of previous drink-driving convictions, was behind the wheel while over the legal alcohol limit when he collided with the victims’ car. The impact caused damage to both vehicles and left the couple shaken, though no life-threatening injuries were reported.
Prosecutors told the court that the defendant had shown a repeated disregard for road safety laws, despite earlier penalties and warnings. Officers described the crash as entirely avoidable and said the driver’s actions placed innocent road users at serious risk.
Following the collision, police arrested the man at the scene. A breath test confirmed he was over the legal limit, and he was later charged with drink-driving and related offences.
In sentencing, the court took into account his previous convictions, stating that prior punishments had failed to deter his behaviour. The judge imposed a custodial sentence, noting the need to protect the public from repeat offending.
Police have urged motorists to understand the serious consequences of drink-driving, stressing that it continues to cause preventable harm on Cumbria’s roads.
