Repair Work Begins on Fire-Damaged Barrow Crematorium

13 May 2026 Repair Work Begins on Fire-Damaged Barrow Crematorium

Work has officially begun to repair the fire-damaged Thorncliffe Crematorium in Barrow, Cumbria, after a blaze earlier this year caused significant structural damage.

The fire, which broke out in March, left parts of the building severely affected, including damage to the roof and internal structure. As a result, the crematorium was forced to suspend its core services, creating disruption for families and funeral providers across the area.

Following detailed on-site investigations, including structural and electrical assessments, authorities have now moved forward with a comprehensive repair programme. The restoration work is expected to take several weeks, reflecting the scale of the damage sustained.

Westmorland and Furness Council have confirmed that, alongside repair efforts, there will also be investment in upgrading the crematorium’s equipment. This includes improvements to cremators and associated systems, aimed at enhancing efficiency and modernising the facility once it reopens.

Despite the disruption, some services have already resumed. Since mid-April, chapel-based funeral ceremonies have been allowed to take place at the site, enabling families to continue holding services locally while repair work progresses.

The council has also been working closely with funeral directors to minimise the impact on bereaved families, providing regular updates and helping coordinate alternative arrangements where necessary.

Authorities have expressed hope that full cremation services will resume by late July or early August, depending on the progress of the ongoing repairs.

The restoration marks an important step toward returning the crematorium to full operation, as it continues to serve as a vital facility for the local community during difficult times.
